The Inn’s History
The Washington Inn was first constructed in 1846. The large columns reaching all the way up to the third floor were meant to resemble those of Mount Vernon, the plantation house of George Washington. The building had gone through many owners up until 1940 when Mrs. Martha Brown Hand opened the house as an Inn. The Washington Inn’s business flourished with its emphasis being on the quality of good service and great food.
In 1979, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Craig purchased the Inn and restaurant. After acquiring their liquor license in 1981, they shifted the business to concentrate only on the restaurant. The restaurant is now owned and operated by Arthur and Rona’s eldest son, Michael Craig. With the help of Mimi Wood, Executive Chef of over 25 years, and Mike’s siblings David and Betsy, the Washington Inn has grown to be one of the top ranked and most visited fine dining restaurants in Cape May.
The Craig Family has carefully preserved the beauty & essence of this distinctive treasure without undertaking major alterations to its original form. The Inns welcoming facade overlooks tree-lined Washington Street in the seaside community’s Historic District.
